The Risks and Rewards of Running a Small Business in Cornwall
Having cut my teeth in marketing working for design agencies, a publishing house, photographers and product manufacturers, I took the leap of faith fifteen years ago to branch out and start my own business, Aplomb Creative Marketing, and have never looked back. I can’t pretend that it has been all plain sailing, and like anyone working for themselves will tell you, there are days when you question whether it would just be easier to work for someone else for a bit, but when you get used to the uncertainty of the ‘feast and famine’ of self-employment, it would be very hard to go back. As time went by, my kids grew into teenagers and my husband, Tony, joined the business which meant we could spread our wings and take on a lot more work. Besides a four-year stint in Bristol (over 20 years ago now!) I have always worked in Cornwall, meaning I have a deep understanding of how Cornish businesses work, and what they need to do in order to have a chance of success in what can be a challenging business landscape. A solid marketing strategy for a small business in Falmouth, is just as important as for a large chain of stores, albeit on a different scale and with a more focused target market, and I still get immense joy and pride in helping to build a brand and successfully maintain it. The challenges are many, but the rewards are so worth it…
Cornwall, my home…
With its stunning coastline, rolling hills, and rich history, this county has long been a destination for those seeking a slower pace of life, natural beauty, and a sense of community. But beyond the tourist attractions and postcard-perfect beaches, there’s something particularly magical about running a small business in this corner of the world. In Cornwall, entrepreneurship isn't just about financial success—it's about being part of a vibrant community, supporting local culture, and embracing the unique lifestyle that this region offers.
A Strong Sense of Community
One of the most rewarding aspects of running a small business in Cornwall is the sense of community. Cornish towns and villages are tightly knit, and there's a genuine camaraderie among local business owners. Whether you're opening a café, a boutique shop, or a creative studio, you'll find that other entrepreneurs are quick to offer advice, support, and even collaboration opportunities.
This network of small businesses often creates a ripple effect, where one person's success becomes a win for the entire community. Many local businesses source their products from other Cornish suppliers, keeping money circulating within the region and contributing to a more sustainable economy. It's a mutually supportive ecosystem where collaboration often trumps competition.
InspirationAL SURROUNDINGS
The landscape of Cornwall is nothing short of breathtaking, and it has a profound impact on the work and creativity of local business owners. Whether you're overlooking the Atlantic while sipping your morning coffee or taking a break by wandering through wildflower-strewn meadows, the natural surroundings offer constant inspiration.
For many business owners, this environment fuels creativity and innovation. Artists, designers, and makers are particularly drawn to Cornwall, using the rugged cliffs, golden beaches, and dramatic skies as muses for their work. And even if your business is less creative—say, a consultancy or a tech startup—there's something undeniably refreshing about working in such a peaceful, picturesque location. The Cornish landscape has a way of sparking new ideas, solving problems, and reminding you why you chose this path.
A Booming Tourism Economy
While tourism can be a seasonal affair, Cornwall’s popularity as a destination brings plenty of opportunities for local businesses to thrive. During the summer months, the influx of visitors creates a bustling atmosphere, with people seeking unique products, experiences, and services that reflect the local culture. If you’re running a retail store, restaurant, or hotel, this is prime time to showcase what makes Cornwall special.
Even outside the tourist season, Cornwall’s appeal continues to draw a steady stream of visitors. Eco-tourism, cultural festivals, and events like the famous Padstow Christmas Festival keep the region lively year-round. And for small business owners, the ability to tap into this diverse audience is an incredible advantage.
Embracing Sustainability
Cornwall has a deep connection to the environment, and many businesses here are leading the charge when it comes to sustainability. Whether it’s reducing plastic waste, sourcing locally, or embracing renewable energy, there’s a shared understanding that protecting the natural world is crucial to the region's future. This commitment to sustainability is not just a trend—it's a way of life in Cornwall, and it resonates deeply with the ethos of many local entrepreneurs.
As a small business owner, this offers an opportunity to build a brand that aligns with these values. Customers, particularly tourists, are increasingly seeking out businesses that prioritise ethical and sustainable practices, and Cornwall is the perfect place to develop a business with a conscience.
The Lifestyle Perks
Running a small business can be demanding, but in Cornwall, the work-life balance is far more attainable. While the hustle is real, the opportunity to step outside into nature—whether for a quick surf, a coastal hike, or simply to enjoy a sunset—helps maintain a sense of equilibrium that’s hard to find in more urban settings.
Many small business owners in Cornwall relish the slower pace of life, finding time to enjoy family, hobbies, and the stunning surroundings that are often just minutes away from their doorstep. This lifestyle is one of the biggest draws for people who want to escape the corporate grind and build something more personal, meaningful, and fulfilling.
Challenges and Rewards
Of course, running a small business in Cornwall isn't without its challenges. The rural location can sometimes make logistics more complicated, and the seasonal nature of tourism can create peaks and troughs in revenue. However, the rewards far outweigh these challenges for most.
The joy of creating something that reflects your passion, in a place as beautiful and inspiring as Cornwall, is unmatched. The relationships you build with locals, the contribution you make to the community, and the connection to the environment all add layers of richness to the experience.
Who Would Want to be Anywhere Else…
In Cornwall, running a small business is more than just a job—it’s a lifestyle that blends work with the stunning beauty of the region. Whether you’re an artisan, a restaurateur, or a service provider, Cornwall offers the perfect backdrop for turning your entrepreneurial dreams into reality. It’s a place where you can embrace the natural world, build lasting relationships, and create something that’s not just successful, but also deeply fulfilling.
For those seeking the perfect blend of work and life, Cornwall truly is a dream come true.
